How I can help:
Premarital Therapy
Premarital therapy differs from traditional couples therapy because premarital therapy is aimed at avoiding problems rather than fixing them. In this sense, premarital therapy will help to ensure that you have a stable foundation from which to begin your marriage.
What you will gain:
In premarital therapy, you’ll gain:
- Emotional coping skills and communication tools for a strong, healthy relationship
- A better understanding of your and your partner’s communication patterns and relationship hot spots
- Strategies for avoiding conflict and for dealing with it when it happens
- The tools you need for the most fulfilling and happy marriage possible
What we will discuss:
We’ll focus on the issues most important to you and I’ll support you in discussing any potential challenge areas. Frequent topics for premarital counseling include:
- Communication and conflict resolution
- Finances
- Relationships with family of origin and in-laws
- Having children and parenting
- Beliefs, values, and life goals
- Emotional and sexual intimacy and affection
Premarital Therapy
What will we do?
Premarital therapy will also help you to identify and manage any vulnerabilities in your relationship before they become problems during marriage.
We’ll work together to bring these issues to the surface now, understand them, and troubleshoot them. This will provide you and your partner with important information to help you avoid surprises and to empower you both to be understanding and supportive during times of stress.
Premarital therapy is skills-based and typically lasts for 8 weeks. It can, however, be specifically tailored to each couple, so this general guideline may vary. Many couples also find that it is a good tool for exploring their need for continued counseling together (to resolve any issues that come up and to have the best marriage possible), or for individual counseling.
